Group Discussion

Nicole, we need to select one of the Edison Diamond Disc Recordings to analyze. Let me know what you think... I like "Till the boys come home" under popular vocals.
Thanks, Kerrie

10/13/10 - Kerrie's thoughts:
I thought that this song would be a good selection because the title was very characteristic of the American involvement in World War I. Also, the piece was both vocals and instrumental, so there was more to tune into. I think a recording like this would be effective with students because it truly gives you a feeling of the tone and simplicity of the time. Nicole's additions: This song is very upbeat and positive. It explains to you the thoughts and feelings of Americans during this trying time. This recording-“Till the boys Come Home” would be effective with students because it allows them to really hear the words of an American who was in the middle of a war.
Kerrie's thoughts:
This recording, “’Till the boys come home” or “Keep the home fires burning” could be used in the classroom:
1. To set the mood or tone for the lesson on World War I as classroom background music. The students can become emotionally involved in history through the use of music and make more meaningful connections to their knowledge of history.
2. To appeal to the auditory learning styles of students and bring history to life by having students listen to music as well as read facts.
3. To present as a lesson activity where students have to analyze and then discuss the recording and how it relates to the history of America at the time.
4. To be incorporated in music class as a cross-curricular activity. There it may be examined for its musical characteristics and as an introduction to learning about music of the early 1900’s.
5. To be incorporated as a part of student presentations or projects on the history of World War I. Students can be taught how to use primary resources to enhance their knowledge of a particular topic.
Nicole's additions:
6. Students could use this piece of music to listen to the music and also to read a song sheet. This will give students opportunity to hear and read music.
7. This piece of music can be used as an anticipatory activity to have students begin a unit on WWI. Play the music in class and have students complete a KWL.
8. This piece of music can be used in music class to teach the different types of music during different time periods.
9. Students can use this piece of music and the written sheet music to analyze tempo, rhythm, beats, etc. for this recording.
10. This music can be played as background music while students write letters to soldiers who are fighting in a battle.

Excellent Job, Nicole!!! We basically had the same analysis of this piece and I think that all of these activities will promote critical thinking in students by stepping away from the normal history memorization and truly allowing students to have a more subjective view of history. Thanks, Kerrie

Thanks Kerrie! Nice job to you too! I agree that we had very similar reviews of this piece of music. I believe we compiled a very thorough list of activies that will encourage critical thinking in our classrooms. Well done! It's been a pleasure working with you again! Nicole
